Portabliss: Cave Story (3DS eShop)
This is Portabliss, a column about downloadable games that can be played on the go. In discussing any specific version of Cave Story, it’s not particularly useful to evaluate it on its gameplay merits. Any version you pick up is going to be great on those terms. Even if you’re playing it with a keyboard on PC, the controls are going to be responsive and movement is just going to be fun. It’s one of the best Metroidvania-style games on any platform, and the release of a new version is just another excuse to try it. So try it!
What is more useful than evaluating each new version is unpacking the differences between the many, many versions. With that in mind, the new Cave Story for the 3DS on eShop is Cave Story in 3D, but it is not Cave Story 3D.
